As a matter of fact, sexual harassment and rape can happen in any situation. Effective means of self-defense are particularly critical.
Available self-defense tools
When a sexual assault is about to happen, here are some of the self-defense tools available, and the pros and cons of each of them.
Personal defense alarms: these devices emit a high-decibel siren that attracts the attention of those around them and scares off potential threats. However, if the assault occurs in a confined space or on a deserted road, the alarm may not be heard.
Spray: a spray containing capsaicin that can cause eye and skin irritation and incapacitate an attacker.
Telescopic bat or baseball bat: self-defense weapon, suitable for putting into the bag, used for self-defense. Can be used in self-defense when attacked but not trained in self-defense techniques. Yet, some of these bats are heavy and difficult to carry. If taken by the assailant, it could instead become an instrument of violence.
Bright flashlights or Tasers: Bright flashlights can shine directly into the human eye, causing temporary blindness, and are suitable for women walking at night. Taser is similar in appearance to a flashlight but releases a high-voltage arc for quick self-defense. Useful, but in the event of an attack emergency, it is questionable whether they can be taken out of the backpack in time if you don't have them in hand at all times.
Wearable devices: Lightweight and usually able to be worn on the hand at all times to provide an alert in the event of an attack.
CERRET introduced a safety bracelet that could be decorative jewelry, able to fulfill the aesthetic and safety needs of women at the same time.
In the event of sexual assault, with no one nearby to call for help, you could just press the emergency button on the bracelet. An immediate call will be sent to your emergency contacts, along with a text message with your location. Your family and friends will be able to call the police for you or come to your aid in time. The position will be shared for as long as 48 hours until the police or your contact finds you.
